Real Guyana – 2013 – Celebrating 20 years of progress? – By RealGuyana

If you’re still arguing about what L.F.S Burnham did to Guyana and the state the PNC government left the country in 20years ago then this is for you. Put aside the glossy images of Kaieteur Falls, the jaguars, and the open savannah you see in the Tourist brochures, most Guyanese have never seen a jaguar in the wild and most can’t afford to visit the waterfalls.

Our capitol city Georgetown, once known as the Garden City has become the Garbage City, an eyesore on the South American map. Guyana holds the distinction of being the only English-speaking country in South America, a Caribbean territory, and the dirtiest place you’ll find between the two. This footage has all been collected in the first quarter of 2013 in and around the capitol city of Georgetown.

As the PPP government continues to plunder the state coffers for personal gain and pet projects, RealGuyana aims to draw your attention to a few things. As the government’s current commitment to a US$ 21 million Marriott hotel comes under fire from the population at large, this video provides a visual answer to what’s got people so upset. There is widespread agreement amongst those opposing the project that the money could and should be better spent; the government’s reply is that a spanking new hotel will attract tourists.

Ask yourself this… would you travel 1000 miles to see this? Garbage piles attracting vermin left festering on street corners for weeks, raw sewage dumped into the waterways, crumbling roads, shoddy maintenance, no building codes, an utter lack of regulation, poor service, having to pay a bribe everywhere you go for just about anything you need, police harassment and brutality, a slim chance of justice should anything happen to you and a government who threaten ordinary citizens for voicing their discontent. Is this the 20 years of progress since the last govt. that they keep trying to drill into our heads? Is this the future our children deserve?

Are we too destined to be abandoned on the streets in our old age after a life of service to our nation? Is this what has become of our home? These are the stories of those who’ll never make The Chronicle, The Times, NCN, TVG, or any of the government-owned media houses. Progress for the few at the expense of the many is not progress at all… it’s a sham. Welcome to Guyana.
