U.S. Embassy Georgetown Press Release – Today, the Judiciary of Guyana and the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) launched the Court Case Management System (CCMS). This U.S.-funded Caribbean Anti-Crime program, implemented by the National Center for State Courts in close collaboration with the Judiciary of Guyana, aims to help modernize court operations by transitioning from manual to automated case management. As a result of CCMS implementation and its innovative technology, the magistrates’ courts will administer justice in a more efficient, transparent, and effective manner, reducing backlogs and delays in processing cases. CCMS implementation will also contribute to increasing citizens’ trust and confidence in the justice system.
The COVID pandemic demonstrated the resilience of Guyana’s judiciary when the administration of justice continued unimpeded. While courts in other countries suspended proceedings due to pandemic restrictions, Guyana’s courts continued to diligently work, employing innovative solutions that were subsequently modeled by other countries.
Today’s CCMS launch marks a milestone for the judiciary and the citizens of Guyana and highlights the vital role of the courts in upholding the rule of law in Guyana. As a member of the CCMS Consortium comprised of countries in the region and abroad, the Judiciary of Guyana will benefit significantly from a cost effective and sustainable technology for automated case management, including ownership of the system’s source code and the associated intellectual property.
Through the U.S. Caribbean Anti-Crime program, Guyana’s Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs and Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions have also collaborated on programs designed to support regional partners to deter and combat crime.
