On May 27, 2023, several members of the Guyanese diaspora in the Washington DC metropolitan area came together to attend a candlelight vigil in the Washington DC area to remember and honor the victims of the tragic Mahdia school dormitory fire. Our hearts are filled with sorrow as we grieve the loss of 19 children and pray for the many others who were injured. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this terrible incident.

The event was sponsored by Guyanese United and local restaurant Taste of the Caribbean (Ms. Lorraine Watson, Proprietor), and it brought together concerned citizens who wanted to show their support after the tragedy. Mignon Patrick, Financial Attache to the Embassy of Guyana, was also in attendance.

The short program was led by Ms. Annetha Hall. Ms. Ellen Tappin and Mr. Paul Tennassee also spoke at the event. Ms. Tappin suggested that a Commission of Inquiry into the event. At the end of the ceremony, candles were lit and a moment of silence was observed for the victims. Attendees also made financial donations, and together with funds donated online, a total of $1443.77 was collected. Ian Hall, owner of Guyana Graphic and Executive Director of Guyanese United, along with his wife Annetha Hall, committed funds to bring the total amount collected to $1800 (US) which will be distributed in coordination with a liaison in Guyana to ensure it is properly allocated.
