Renowned Guyanese artist Dudley Charles had a showing of a number of new works at the Asman Art Gallery housed in the NBC studios in Washington, DC. Dudley describes the artwork showcased in this way; "My most recent "drawings" are an outgrowth of a painting technique I developed many years ago.
It involves placing strips of paper unto a wet – sometimes unstretched – canvas incorporating them into the body of the painting as color, texture and form.
The stripped and torn paper actually construct a tough and expansive surface which considers what I can do with the creative space."
The installation included items which ranged from small intimate pieces to grand over sofa works with stunning color. The new technique Charles describes results in pieces that are three-dimensional so that as the viewer changes his perspective the artwork provides a different visual experience.
Dudley Charles was born in Guyana in 1945. He is a self-educated artist and has exhibited his work in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Lagos, Nigeria, London, England, Nagoya, Japan, and New York City. He has also exhibited in Washington, DC at the IDB Bank and at the Smithsonian Institution. His most show at the Asman Art Gallery ran through January 24th, 2015.
