EARLY INFLUENCES
Arti Cameron is a highly motivated 23 year old with a passion for life. She is currently pursuing a career in medicine. Towards that end she has recently completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences (majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry). Arti’s interest in medicine was sparked when she was nine years old after meeting her future role model and stepmother who was
about to begin her medical studies at the University of the West Indies. This curiosity in medicine heightened significantly when Arti suffered severe asthmatic attacks and was admitted to the Savanna-La-Mar General Hospital in western Jamaica. She wanted to understand the nature of her illness. Arti also sought to find out why the other children on the ward were admitted and what was being done to help them recover.
Since this period of hospitalization, Arti has experienced an unwavering interest in the field of medicine–an experience that motivated her to work hard throughout primary and secondary school in pursuit of her childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor. Having just completed a degree in biology as a pre-med student, she is currently preparing to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), a requirement for admission to medical school in the United States.
ACADEMIC HISTORY
So far, Arti Angelita Cameron has lived in three countries–Guyana, Jamaica, and the United States– and considers herself a world citizen. She was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and attended Starters Nursery School and Sacred Heart Primary School prior to migrating to Jamaica in 1995 where she lived for about five years. Once in Jamaica, she attended the Savanna-La-Mar Primary School and began assimilating into the vibrant Jamaican culture. She quickly joined the school’s prestigious marching band as part of the cheer leading squad that was the flare and pride of her school, and she was part of that school’s dance group that won a prominent parish-level dance competition. While in Jamaica, she formed life-long bonds with many people and will always consider Jamaica her second home. In addition, Arti was given the opportunity to form many additional life-long friendships when she returned to Guyana in August, 1999, and re-enrolled at her old school–Sacred Heart Primary. There she prepared for the Common Entrance Exam and moved on to St. Joseph High School in 2000. Her myriad extra-curricular activities at St. Joseph High served to enrich her academic life and she represented this school in many ways: she played netball, participated in Mashramani dance competitions, was chosen to be the first speaker on the school’s debating team, was elected president of the environmental student group- The Green Team, won the 2003 Miss St. Joseph High School pageant (Junior Queen), modeled at school events, and passed nine subjects at the CXC O’level exams in one sitting. Arti then moved on to Queens College just prior to migrating to the United States in December, 2005.
Arti has always felt that her education in the Caribbean was second to none and quickly put this personal belief to the test. As a result, she graduated in July, 2008, with an Associate Degree in Science with honors from LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC), one of the top three community colleges in the US according to a US national survey. She was immersed into the rich diversity which LAGCC (dubbed “the world’s community college”) offered, with its variety of students coming from 160 countries. It was against this backdrop–and with a proud Caribbean secondary education–that Arti won a college-wide speech competition and a cash prize. In addition, due to her stellar academic achievements, she was the recipient of several scholarships and grants.
Arti was also elected president of the LAGCC Psychology Club and was further elected to the Student Advisory Council. Her name appeared on the Dean’s List on a regular basis. Furthermore, she has published literary work in the college’s magazine, Literary LaGuardia. In September 2008, Arti enrolled at her dream college, Hunter College, located “in the heart of bustling Manhattan” and “famous for the diversity of its student body, which is as diverse as New York City itself”. It was while a student of Hunter College that Arti volunteered at the Hospital for Special Surgery–America’s leading orthopedic hospital, according to the US News and World Report. She graduated from Hunter College in June, 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. However, instead of opting for a Master’s Degree, Arti has chosen to spend her time in the lengthy process of preparing for and applying to medical school (including studying for the Medical College Admission Test–MCAT exam).
MODELING AND MEDIA EXPERIENCE
As a teen, Arti Cameron was able to advance her modeling skills and gained valuable media experience which widened her horizons and contributed to her rich experience while in Guyana.
During her reign as Junior Queen of Ms. St. Joseph High School, Arti paid a courtesy call to the Head of State, President Bharat Jagdeo, in order to highlight her platform: Poverty Housing in Guyana. She further promoted this platform by making a guest appearance on a telethon hosted by Habitat for Humanity Guyana to raise funds for and awareness of the cause.
Arti was sponsored by designer Myrna Lee and was able to enhance her modeling skills when she was awarded a modeling scholarship upon winning the junior crown. This scholarship proved to be the gateway to the Guyanese world of fashion. First, she worked extensively with renowned Guyanese designer, Sonia Noel, on the Simply Irresistible Fashion Show and several other major projects–including print, promotional, and runway modeling. Then prominent Guyanese designer, Vonda Gaspar, hand-picked Arti to be part of her elite line up of runway models. Next, Arti demonstrated her awareness of Caribbean integration when she accepted an offer to represent Trinidad and Tobago at an international hair show hosted by Guyana at Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel. In addition, Arti was able to include her father in one of her modeling projects when they made a “father-daughter” appearance at the 2004 Mother and Daughter Pageant.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Since she was five (5) years old, Arti was raised in a single parent home by her father, Wilfred Cameron (a Guyanese media practitioner who is a former editor-in-chief and news anchor of GTV & NCN, a former editor and news anchor of News Update, and a founding reporter of The Evening News). Arti shares close bonds with her two siblings, 12-year-old Rayon Sookram and one-year-old Sarah Cameron. She also shares ties with her biological mother, Savitri Chotoo (a former confidential secretary) and her stepmother, Keron Buchanan-Cameron (a medical doctor attached to a major hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica). In addition, Arti’s inner circle of closest friends consists of individuals from Africa (Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo), India, China, Myanmar (Burma), Australia, France, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, the United States–and of course, Guyana! Her worldview is greatly enhanced, enriched, and enlarged by this precious group of people whose friendship she cherishes. In fact, Team Arti Cameron consists of several talented persons including an aspiring fashion designer from Namibia and a diplomat from Cote d’Ivoire, who manages several youth empowerment initiatives across the world under the United Nations (UNICEF).
