Derek Poole former Guyana Defence Force aviator awarded “VFR Pilot of the year for 2013” by Era Helicopters

Derek Poole rotorcraft pilot for Era Helicopters operating in the Gulf of Mexico was awarded “VFR Pilot of the year for 2013” by his organization.

Derek Poole rotorcraft pilot for Era Helicopters operating in the Gulf of Mexico was awarded “VFR Pilot of the year for 2013” by his organization.

Derek was born in Victoria Village, ECD, Guyana and attended McKenzie High School in Linden. He joined the Guyana National Service (GNS) as a Pioneer in 1977 and then was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Guyana Defence Force in February 1980. His duties included serving at numerous capacities at GNS locations from 1980 to 1985.

Poole attended pilot training in 1985 at Flight Safety Academy in Vero Beach, where he was certified as a Commercial Instrument Airplane and Rotorcraft Pilot. From 1986 through 2006 while in the GDF, he flew mainly helicopters.

Derek migrated to the USA in 2006, and joined Era Helicopters in September 2008 and resides in Texas. His current assignment is flying government inspectors to and from oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
