President Donald Ramotar began his first overseas tour with a reception hosted at the Guyana embassy which was attended by a sizeable crowd of people from around the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

President Ramotar, who was accompanied by Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, was introduced by Ambassador Bayney Karan. Following the warm welcome, President Ramotar addressing the crowd gave an overview of the state of affairs in Guyana in a number of areas including the economy, education, tourism and the general infrastructure.

Following his remarks, President Ramotar invited the audience to ask questions about Guyana. The question and answer session lasted for over an hour as Guyanese nationals now living in the U.S. asked about enhancement of democracy, training and facilities for a future in sports, police force leadership, and foreign investments by Guyanese overseas nationals and in particular the role of China in Guyana.

President Ramotar told the crowd that indeed Guyana has it share of problems, but that the government was working diligently to address all the problems. He spoke about the location of Guyana and its dual placement as a South American but also a Caribbean country. He added that these two facts could prove to be a valuable asset for Guyana as it could provide the gateway between the two regions. He mentioned the building of new schools across Guyana and the construction of a new canal to mitigate flooding. President Ramotar asked the crowd gathered to be patient, to work together to help Guyana realize its full potential.
