One of three persons who were rescued from the Sussex Street Canal on Saturday evening after a taxi lost control and careened off a bridge subsequently succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital while receiving medical attention.

Dead is Seventeen year old Elbert Thom of Lot 181, Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, while his mother, Alma Thom who also received injuries was treated and sent away.

Reports are that around 18 hours 30 A taxi driver lost control of his car, HB 3878 and went overboard after his wheel got stuck in a ridge in the dilapidate concrete structure on Cemetery Road, as a result the Thoms and the taxi driver were trapped until persons in the area came to their Aid.

Eyewitness George Green told Guyana Graphic that he was at home when he got a message saying that a car was overboard, when he got to the scene saw someone lying on the ground, he subsequently learnt that a child was in the car and immediately jumped overboard.

During his search of the submerged car he pulled out two adults, the driver and a passenger, both unresponsive. Meanwhile residents of the Castello Housing Scheme and North East La Penitence area immediately blocked the bridge with pieces of wood to prevent traffic from passing.

The bridge over the last few weeks has been the cause of several accidents resulting in vehicles running overboard. As such persons in the area are calling on the relevant authority to repair or construct a new bridge.
