The first annual Diwali celebration under the auspices of the Embassy of Guyana in Washington, DC, was held last Saturday at the MuruganĀ TempleĀ in Lanham, Maryland.
Attendees to this inaugural event were treated to a wide variety of performances ranging from the traditional with a playlet depicting the kidnapping of Sita, to modern Bollywood music and dancing. Young and old took to the stage for performances, and although at times the production was a little uneven, it was balanced out by the enthusiasm of all the performers.
Guyana’s Ambassador to the US and the OAS, H.E. Bayney Karran welcomed everyone present. He introduced Suriname’s Ambassador to the US, H.E. Subhas Mungra, and Suriname’s Ambassador to the OAS, H.E. Niermala Badrasing, and thanked them for taking the time to attend the event.
Towards the end of the evening, Mrs. Donna Karran wife of Ambassador Karran graciously acknowledged the performers and presented them with flowers.
