GDF Special Forces Recover Pilot’s Body Following Cessna 208 Crash
Georgetown, Guyana | April 13, 2026
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that members of the Guyana Defence Force Special Forces have successfully reached the crash site of a downed aircraft operated by Air Services Limited, marking a somber development in an ongoing aviation incident.
According to an official statement issued on Monday, the aircraft, identified as a Cessna 208 Caravan bearing registration number 8R-YAC, had crashed in a remote location, prompting a coordinated search-and-rescue operation led by the Rescue Coordination Center.
Recovery Operation in Challenging Terrain

Special Forces personnel navigated difficult terrain to access the crash site, where they confirmed the death of the pilot, Captain Rider Castillo. The body has since been recovered, and preparations are underway to extract it from the area.
The operation reflects the continued reliance on specialized military units for aviation emergencies in Guyana’s interior regions, where dense forests and limited infrastructure often complicate response efforts.
National Response and Condolences
The Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, alongside the GCAA and the GDF, extended condolences to the deceased pilot’s family and loved ones. The aviation community has also expressed grief at the loss, underscoring the risks faced by those operating in regional and hinterland aviation.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. While no preliminary findings have been released, standard procedures will include examination of wreckage, flight records, weather conditions, and maintenance history.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about aviation safety in remote operations, where aircraft such as the Cessna 208 Caravan are widely used for transporting passengers and supplies across Guyana’s interior.
Further updates are expected as investigators continue their work.
